Isle of Wight Chess Tournament

The Isle of Wight Chess Tournament will return to Ryde from Monday 16 to Sunday 22 February 2026, bringing several hundred players, spectators and families to the Island during February half term.

Now firmly established as one of the UK’s leading winter chess festivals, the event attracts a strong international field, including Grandmasters, International Masters and England internationals, alongside players of all ages and abilities. The Masters section alone features competitors from more than 20 countries, with live online coverage watched by thousands worldwide.

In addition to the main tournament at Ryde School, a programme of free community chess activities will run in the town centre throughout the week, encouraging local involvement and additional footfall for cafés, restaurants and shops.

The tournament generates significant off-season visitor spend, with players and families typically staying between 3 and 7 nights. Local hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation play a vital role in supporting the event.
