Soft: An Exhibition by The Island VI Form Foundation Course

Currently on display until Tuesday 13th January 2026.

The Island VI Form Foundation Students are currently showing their coursework outcomes in the Clayden Gallery at Quay Arts. The Foundation course itself consists of three stages: Research and Exploratory, Pathway and finally, the Personal Confirmatory Study. This show represents work from one of the three initial Exploratory Units, ‘Sculpture’.

Students visited the recent Quay Arts OPEN Biennial exhibition ‘SOFT’, which has been the focus and starting point for this course unit. They had the assistance of artist Steve Baxter, who was also a displaying artist in the OPEN exhibition, and he worked alongside our students as they began to explore 3D forms and volume. The results you see serve to illustrate the creative stages, including experimentation and the development of concepts, as well as their outcomes.

There is always a tight turnaround at this stage of the course; students had just four weeks to create the work and curate the space. The work describes a rich and diverse interpretation of ‘Soft’, and the students’ maquettes and concept boards provide an insight into their working processes.

“We are justifiably proud and impressed with the students’ creative courage in interpreting the theme, and would like to thank The Quay Arts Team and Steve Baxter for helping us to showcase their work.”
